Department Chair Search

The Department of Computer Science at Western Michigan University invites applications for the position of Department Chair, starting August 2012. We seek a scholar who will lead a computer science department in a strong student-centered research university. Western Michigan University is ranked among the 100 top-tier public universities in U.S. News & World Report. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has placed WMU among the 76 public research institutions. WMU has an enrollment of over 25,000 (approximately 5000 of whom are graduate students) in eight colleges, and is currently adding a School of Medicine.

The Department of Computer Science in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS), offers B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, including an ABET accredited major. The department currently has 14 tenure-track positions, just under 230 undergraduate and 70 graduate students. Department research includes high performance computing, computer network analysis and simulations, mobile and sensor networks, computer security, artificial intelligence, pervasive computing, data mining, and computational sciences including computational physics, medical- and bio-informatics.

We seek a credible and fair decision maker with strategic vision and leadership abilities, who fosters consensus building and outreach to constituents. The ideal candidate will be a scholar with a sustained record of publication and research funding that merits tenure at the rank of professor.  This person will mentor faculty to achieve research excellence and augment external funding.  The Chair will support the undergraduate and graduate teaching mission of the department and advance the community among faculty and students.

We are looking for an innovative leader who will communicate the department’s achievements, and cultivate interdisciplinary scholarship and partnerships with industry and the community.

CEAS has seven academic departments, with programs in engineering, engineering technology and applied sciences. The College resides in a $100 million facility surrounded by a Business Technology and Research Park on a 270-acre engineering campus. For information about CEAS see http://www.wmich.edu/engineer. Western Michigan University is located in Kalamazoo, about halfway between Chicago and Detroit. Kalamazoo is the cultural and educational center of southwestern Michigan, within an hour drive from Lake Michigan. It is a thriving metropolitan area and a vibrant technological center with a strong manufacturing and service presence.
